New Girl on the Block
July 18 2012
Yahoo! may have just put itself back on the map. Marissa has arrived.
Yahoo! has announced a major change in it's corporate governance starting 17th July 2012. Marissa Mayer, the 20th employee that Google hired, and the first ever female, will be President and CEO in an attempt to rebuild their failing empire. The company has had 3 CEOs in the past year but Marissa Mayer firmly believes she can resolve the company's weakened position. But the question is who is Marissa?
Marissa may be known in the Sillicon Valley for having spent her career at Google, climbing the corporate ladder to her VP role. But perhaps for the rest of us, @BorowitzReport can speak for us when he says: "I had never heard of Yahoo's new CEO, so I Googled her."
As for the sudden change of employment between Google and Yahoo whilst this may surprise some people it is not the first time Google experiences a loss in top management. Sillicon Valley is a constantly changing workplace. People come and go and you only need to look at Sheryl Sandberg's department from the search giant to Facebook a few years back.
For Marissa, if jumping to a CEO position wasn’t challenging enough, she has announced the birth of her first child due in a few months. But she affirms that she will only be taking a couple of weeks off, while keeping her work under control. Welcome to your new role Marissa, as both mother and leader.
